How Our Calculators Work
Each calculator combines a transparent formula with national average pricing and state/regional cost multipliers. Inputs include roof size, pitch, material, tear-off layers, and labor factors. Outputs are educational estimates, not contractor quotes.
Cost Assumptions
National baseline pricing reflects typical asphalt shingle installation costs. Other materials are calculated using published multipliers (metal ≈ 2.1x, tile ≈ 2.6x, composite ≈ 2.0x, flat ≈ 1.4x). Regional multipliers reflect labor and material differences across U.S. states.
Pricing Sources
Pricing references come from BLS construction labor data, manufacturer wholesale pricing, public permit records, contractor surveys, and homeowner-reported project costs. See our Sources Library for a full list.
Calculation Methods
All formulas are coded as reusable utilities, peer-reviewed internally, and documented in each calculator's "How It Works" section. Edge cases and contingency buffers (typically 10%) are noted on each tool.
Data Collection Standards
We collect anonymous calculator usage data (state, roof size, material, estimated cost, timestamp) to refine national and regional benchmarks. No personally identifiable information is stored with calculation events.
Update Process
Cost assumptions are reviewed quarterly. Material multipliers and regional adjustments are updated as new pricing data becomes available. Significant changes are documented in the report archive.
